How to Pass Your UK Driving Test First Time – Expert Tips from a Bolton Driving Instructor
Passing your driving test on the first attempt is a goal for many learner drivers and as experienced driving instructors, we understand the common challenges learners face and how to overcome them.
Follow these expert tips to increase your chances of success.
1. Take Enough Lessons
It’s common for learners to underestimate how many lessons they will need to reach test standard. The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional tuition plus, if possible, around 22 hours of private practice.
Every learner is different though, so we tailor your tuition to suit your learning style and ideal pace and will regularly assess your progress so you will know the optimum time to take your test
2. Learn and Master the ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions
During your practical test, you’ll be asked a ‘Tell Me’ question about car maintenance and a ‘Show Me’ question.
Learning & understanding these not only helps you pass your test but also prepares you for driving after you’ve passed
3. Understand & remedy the Most Common Reasons for Failing
The top reasons people fail their driving test include:
• Not checking mirrors before changing lanes
• incorrect signalling
• Poor road positioning
• Not responding appropriately to road signs
• Unnecessarily hesitation
Of course, as expereinced driving instructors, we cover these areas and more during the lessons.
4. Practice Driving in a Variety of Conditions
Ensure you experience different road types, weather conditions, and times. This is not always possible during the course of your lessons so private practice can definitely help. This helps you build confidence and adaptability.
5. Stay Calm and Confident
Nerves can affect your performance. While often easier said than done, staying calm during your test can make a huge difference. Practice breathing techniques, avoid caffeine before your test, and remember that mistakes can be minor and won’t always result in failure.
By following these tips and taking structured lessons, you’ll be well-prepared for test day. Good luck!
